GTA VI almost had four protagonists β Rockstar chose Jason and Lucia instead
The series' biggest tradition is escalation
Grand Theft Auto V was a turning point: for the first time, the series gave players not one but three playable characters, with instant switching between Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Before that, every GTA had a single hero. So when Rockstar started designing GTA VI, the obvious question β and the obvious marketing logic β pointed towards even more. "After doing GTA 5, we talked about different ideas of β do we do more characters? How do we follow up three characters? Is it four characters now?" Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, told IGN during a visit to the studio (IGN).
Four protagonists were genuinely on the table
The answer, it turns out, was "yes, briefly". Nelson revealed that a GTA VI with four protagonists was discussed internally before the idea was dropped for a very specific reason: "We worried about diluting the amount of player time with each and therefore player connection with those characters." More characters meant less time with each one β and therefore weaker emotional bonds. So the studio "decided to step in this direction of two characters in a relationship": Jason and Lucia (PC Gamer).
A deliberate break with "bigger is better"
The decision stands out precisely because it contradicts the industry's unwritten rule that sequels must always offer more, as PC Gamer notes (PC Gamer). Where GTA V expanded from one protagonist to three, GTA VI contracts from three to two β while the map, the simulation and the animation count explode elsewhere. It is a bet on density rather than quantity: instead of spreading the player's attention across four storylines, Rockstar concentrates it on one couple and their relationship.
Chemistry, the hardest part
Once the choice was made, a new challenge appeared: making players love both characters. "Chemistry is a notoriously hard thing to do in any sort of entertainment. Either the characters and the actors that embody them have it β or they don't," Nelson told IGN. "Everyone involved worked at that pretty hard. I think we've got it." The team also worked on the bond mechanics: according to IGN's exclusive preview coverage, the romance between Jason and Lucia is optional and can be played as a platonic partnership, with a dynamic system that lets players influence the strength of their relationship (IGN).
What it tells us about GTA VI
This anecdote is more than trivia. It confirms that Rockstar's priority for GTA VI is emotional investment β the same logic behind other choices revealed during the preview cycle, from the two-character structure to the denser, more reactive open world described after the Extended Look. Fewer protagonists is a risk: less variety, no character-switching gimmick. But Red Dead Redemption 2 β which featured several protagonists without ever letting players switch between them the way GTA V did (IGN) β had already shown Rockstar exploring narrative structures beyond the three-character formula.
Verdict
GTA VI was very close to having four protagonists. Instead, Rockstar chose a couple β and bet everything on their chemistry. The game launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. GTA VI News will keep covering the subject.
