GTA 6 takes around 80 hours to complete, says Rockstar โ and side missions can change the story
The first real number on GTA 6's length
For years, "how long is GTA 6?" has been one of the most asked questions in gaming. We finally have a first official data point. In a preview interview with The New York Times, Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, revealed that his own playthrough of the game took around 80 hours โ a run he completed back in February 2026, roughly nine months before the November 19 release (IGN, GameSpot).
What those 80 hours actually cover
The figure is not the main story alone. Nelson's playthrough included the full campaign plus "some optional goals with narrative ramifications," which confirms that at least part of GTA 6's side content is designed to influence how Jason and Lucia's story unfolds (VICE). The same NYT preview also described a story structured in chapters, in the spirit of Red Dead Redemption 2 (VICE). In other words, the 80-hour number says as much about the game's structure as about its raw size: Rockstar appears to be betting on optional content that matters, not just filler.
How it compares
Context makes the number land harder. GTA V's main story wraps up in roughly 30 hours for most players, and GTA IV sits closer to 25; Red Dead Redemption 2 stretches to around 50 hours for a thorough run. If Nelson's playthrough is any indication, GTA 6 would be Rockstar's longest single-player campaign by a significant margin (TechPowerUp). It also fits everything else the studio has shown this week: the 26-minute "Extended Look" revealed a Leonida packed with wildlife, over 600,000 unique NPC animations โ more than ten times GTA V โ and a world Rockstar describes as its largest ever.
The caveat: a personal playthrough, not a promise
As exciting as the number is, it should be read carefully. Nelson described his own run, not an official completion time: players who stick to the critical path will almost certainly finish much faster, while completionists exploring every corner of Leonida could spend considerably more than 80 hours (GameSpot). It is a strong signal about the game's scope โ the first concrete figure Rockstar has given us โ but not a contractual length.
What it means for November 19
For players, the takeaway is twofold. First, GTA 6 is shaping up to be an enormous single-player experience, arguably the biggest Rockstar has ever shipped. Second, the studio is clearly counting on side activities with real narrative weight to keep players invested. With the game launching on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026 โ at 30 FPS on consoles, as Rockstar confirmed โ the 80-hour question may soon become "80 hours of what, exactly?" The answer, if the previews are right, is a story where even the detours count (Polygon).
