GTA VI: Rockstar confirms over 600,000 NPC animations โ€” more than 10 times GTA V

A number that says a lot

Three days after the premiere of "GTA VI: An Extended Look", Rockstar keeps releasing figures designed to illustrate the scale of its open world. The latest comes from The New York Times, which spoke with Aaron Garbut, co-head of Rockstar North: GTA VI contains well over 600,000 animations, almost entirely dedicated to the behaviour of the citizens of Leonida. For comparison, GTA V shipped with roughly 55,000 animations, and Red Dead Redemption 2 โ€” already considered a benchmark for living worlds โ€” reached about 300,000. In other words, more than ten times GTA V's library, and double RDR2's (Eurogamer, PC Gamer).

A team dedicated to art-directing every single NPC

The most striking part is not the raw count, but how it was achieved. "We art-directed each individual one of them," Garbut told The New York Times. Rockstar reportedly built a dedicated team whose only mission was to make NPCs more realistic, treating pedestrians less like interchangeable extras and more like designed characters (TechRadar). Every passer-by would have its own silhouette, posture, way of moving and reacting.

This is consistent with what the first previews describe: NPCs who notice a weapon carried in public, who react to the player's behaviour, and whose routines respond to the world around them (GameSpot). The ambition is a city that feels alive even when the player does nothing.

Why it matters

The figure helps explain why Vice City looked so dense during the 26-minute Extended Look, first broadcast on Netflix on August 27, then released on YouTube (PC Gamer). It also puts Rockstar's technical choices in perspective: this level of simulation is one of the reasons the game targets 30 FPS on consoles at launch โ€” while Digital Foundry described the showcase as one of the most impressive it has ever seen in real-time rendering. GTA VI is not just a bigger map: it is a denser, more reactive simulation.

A word of caution

As impressive as they are, these numbers are official statements made during the pre-release campaign: Rockstar is in a marketing phase and the final game may differ in details. An animation count is also not a promise of quality โ€” but it does reveal where the studio's resources went.

Verdict

More than ten times GTA V's animations, double RDR2's, and a team that art-directed every single NPC: the message is clear, GTA VI aims to set a new standard for open-world density. The game is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. GTA VI News will keep following the subject.
